Performance
2011
Desk was a performance to camera in which I took a desk from a studio in the city, boarded a train and travelled with it to the nearest available shoreline. As I stood on the beach, I upturned the desk and attempted to use it to sail across the sea. After several failed attempts, I give up and return to land.
The work came from a series of performances, journeys and durational works where I made many futile attempts to both confront and transcend my immediate environment and take poetic lines of flight, whether through simple gestures of transforming tools and furniture to hand. Other works involved attempting to rip up an entire field of grass by hand and attempting to chip away a large volcanic plug using some stone carving tools.
